What I Pack – Plane Style – The Urban Mum

What I Pack – Plane Style – The Urban Mum

When deciding what to wear on a plane I go with the rule of thumb that comfort is King – yet I don’t ever relinquish style…you could say I like to travel like a Queen…(or a celebrity, as I highlighted in another post)

Finding options that satisfy both needs is key, so I tend to wear similar versions of a few ‘hero’ pieces.

I envy travellers that can slip all they require into carry on luggage – I cannot. However if hypothetically my suitcase ever goes astray – let’s not tempt fate – I could certainly survive for a few days with my hand luggage.

The Tote

I don’t do wheeled bag hand luggage, when I arrive at my destination I find it hard to control the suitcase as well  – two hands full is not practical. So I stick with a bag big enough for all my items (change of clothes, magazines), easy to access and can still fit under the seat so I am not forever up and down at the overhead lockers.

After much trial and error the LV Neverfull works – roomy and sits upright even when full, hence the name – some do not like that there is no zip – however I have a solution – I carry all my valuables in a Cross Body bag.

The Cross Body

My travel handbag of choice is a black Hermes Evelyne. It holds all my valuables on the plane (passport, money, credit cards, phone) – and looks smart enough to take me from sightseeing to dinner when I arrive at my destination.

The Cashmere Poncho

Full disclosure here – the pictured image is from my own range of luxury travel wraps & ponchos – MvT Cashmere.

I have always wrapped and drapped and snuggled myself in Cashmere, so I perfected the design and now manufacture my own. Popped into a handy linen drawstring bag, it is light enough to have in my handbag. On board I am saved from the chill of the always icy A/C, when its time to snooze I pull it up like a hoody for extra snuggle and a sense of privacy. It doesn’t crush so when I arrive feeling sleep deprived and crumpled – it keeps me looking together…

The Black Jersey Pants

Non crushable fabric – chic when you take your seat, still smart when you arrive several hours later (although often I do take a light pair of leggings to change into if I am travelling on an overnight flight).

The Jersey Tunic

Always black, always draped and always crush free. I also go with washable silk button up shirts – a little more dressy if you need to hop off the plane and go straight to work.

The Jersey Tank

Layering is the key for what I wear for Plane Style – I look for a tunic and tank in the same fabric. I wear a tank alone if the temperatures increase, or under the tunic for extra warmth.

The Silk Scarf

Lightweight and always glam. Go for large – with a bit of clever wrapping it becomes a cape – this item is where I introduce colour. Time in the plane makes me look wan – bright silk near my face brings me back to life!

The Large Sunglasses

Go big or bigger is my sunglasses motto. If you try a lighter shade you can just about get away with wearing them inside the terminal – think ‘celebrity’ and go forth hiding those tired peepers.

The Shoes

I have spoken about my need to always carry a pair of good quality foldable Ballet Flats to wear on the plane. Brilliant ‘just in case’ (if your feet swell), perfect to slip in and out of for those toilet visits (the floors of those rooms…yuck).

However I try to begin and end the journey looking put together and on trend. Current faves are the Adidas sneakers (loving white at the moment)…they double up for exercise sessions at the destination.

The Hand-luggage

Now this is for a whole other post, stay tuned – because I have honed these essentials to the bare minimum, whilst still maintaining a semblance of glowing good looks under the pressure of travel…
