Where to Stay in Sydney The Sofitel

Where to Stay in Sydney The Sofitel

“There is something so compelling about waking in a bed someone else has made, free from routine, demands of teens and yes to a morning coffee with ‘that’ view.”

“Bienvenue” greets the doorman, sweeping open the doors. A sublime scent wafts deliciously across the lobby – later I discover it is ‘Essence de Sofitel’ (a unique blend that is available to purchase online – if you are so inclined – personally I’d stay a night to experience it first hand).

Finding ‘me’ again requires leaving home (with the husband) for a Sofitel Sydney Staycation.

These days my notion of lavishness is the glorious glitter of time, ask any mother and I’ll bet top of their wish list won’t be a new handbag, it will be time – to see friends, sleep in, travel, spend time with their partner – all luxurious pursuits.  It is with that in mind that we pack our bags and head for a night to Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour.

It is attention to detail that flavours our stay – from furnishings reflecting the Maritime location of Darling Harbour, Belgium linens adorning the wardrobe doors, ‘those’ baths made to order from a family-run company in Germany, and glorious fresh flowers throughout the hotel. However, it is the staff who reflect the true personality of the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour. It is my job to report; both the excellent and the quirks that might disappoint guests.  The verdict? Each interaction is consistently wonderful.

Club Millesime

Floating above the city skyline, located on Level 35,  Club Millesime Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour is more than a treat – it’s a show-stopper. Floor to ceiling windows brilliantly allows for an aspect from every seat (unlike other lounges where it is an Olympic worthy race to the view – most unrelaxing). The food is impressive too; in the interests of ‘research’, I nibble away. Light as air scones for afternoon tea, hors d’oeuvres and a perfectly executed Gin for cocktail hour, full menu choice for breakfast (I opt for the egg-white omelette with a side of hash-browns for good measure).  With a dedicated private reception area and a host of other conveniences, it is the icing on our Sofitel Staycation escape.

Our Luxury Corner Room (Darling Harbour View) is as incredible as the photos portray – however being curious I tour other room categories to compare – I can report that I was hard-pressed to find a ‘bad’ view.  A sense of light and space prevails.   I have to suppress the urge to jump in the cloud-like bed and not leave. A cup of tea and a book would serve me well for the afternoon.

However there is a five-star hotel and the neighbourhood to explore – in the interest of the ‘rediscovery of me’, unencumbered by day to day routine, that is a luxury I am happy to make time for…

Location, location.

The view of the city skyline and Darling Harbour dazzles with a different intensity from it’s ‘grander’ cousin the Sydney Harbour.  On the edge of the CBD – 15 minutes walk would find you in the hub, 10 minutes to Barangaroo.  Except I do not venture far… I enjoy this perspective and frankly can think of nowhere more enticing right now.

Ta-da – how was the room?

The Luxury Corner Room was perfect for the Husband and I, enough space to unpack and spread out (the wardrobe is not huge, although I prefer having extra space in the room as a result) – plenty of newspapers and magazines provided.  The view dominates, lovely to enjoy the brilliance of the afternoon fading to the softness of sunset.  Opting to sleep with the curtains open we wake to a pink-hued morning.  Plenty of room size options – returning with the teenagers we would book a two-bedroom.

Made to feel at home (robes, bottled water, tea/coffee).

Attention to detail extends to a Nespresso machine, Evian bottled water, aforementioned magazines, individually curated photographed art and the piece de resistance – Lanvin toiletries (Hermes if you stay in a suite).

WI/FI – techie bright stuff.

I can play music through the TV from my phone (initially I am confused, less so after some instruction from the kindly, patient housekeeping staff) – an impromptu Mum and Dad dance party ensue – before it’s time for a swim before dinner.

Action/Relaxation – what activities are on offer?

You might have noticed the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour is home to one of the city’s most photographed pools – our stay coincides with the middle of winter, however braving the elements I take the plunge (the pool is actually heated to a pleasant ‘body temperature’).  The gym is part of my daily routine so I am delighted to note 24-hour access and a good cross-section of equipment.  Le Rivage Pool Bar will be just the spot for a return visit in Summer.

Where to Eat

We pop on our finery for dinner in the signature Atelier – French-inspired grill.  The real test of hotel food and beverage offerings is, would you return if you were not staying the night, we would. Excellent cuts of meat, perfectly cooked fish, creative deserts – although again it is the stand out service – accommodating my whims (I hate eating from a bowl, albeit a beautiful ceramic one – when I ask to have my meal served on a flat plate there are no questions, seamlessly it appears).  The Champagne Bar is perfect for a late-night tipple and Esprit Noir buzzes adjacent to the Lobby.  Club Millesime access allows the option of breakfast on Level 35, or full cooking station variety in Atelier (the husband opts for this and reports a good selection).

Would I stay at this property again?

A resounding yes.  Not much point shying away from the reality that my visit was by invitation – yet we are already planning a return under our own steam.   That is a recommendation in itself.  A luxurious retreat for a sprinkle of me (us) time is highly recommended – the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour represents the finest Sydney has to offer.
